"Yesterday morning, a violent man entered our family home and demanded to confront me. He then brutally attacked my husband Paul," the House Speaker said in a statement Saturday. "He is recovering," she added.

The president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, reported this Saturday that her husband is improving in the hospital after the brutal attack he suffered on Friday when an intruder entered his home in San Francisco.

What happened left her and her family "heartbroken and traumatized."

In her first public comments after the attack, Pelosi thanked the police and paramedics who responded to a 911 call.

"Yesterday morning a violent man broke into our home, demanded to confront me. He then brutally attacked my husband Paul," she wrote in a letter published Saturday.

"Our children, our grandchildren and I are devastated and traumatized by the attack."

The Democratic leader was grateful for the quick police response to the call Paul made to 911, whom he affectionately called 'pop'.

San Francisco police said 42-year-old David DePape, now facing attempted murder charges, trespassed into the home where Paul Pelosi was staying alone and confronted him with a hammer.

This is a developing story.
